When do I get my pregnancy photos taken? | Monica Conlin Photography

Maternity Photography Sessions, A timeline for booking and getting your pregnancy photos

Let’s face it, you have a lot going on when you are pregnant. There are SO many things to plan, figure out, and organize. It takes a lot to prepare for your newest little family member’s arrival. I think among all the other things you are planning, like the baby’s name, the nursery, your maternity leave, etc, I think you should make it a priority to plan and schedule your Maternity Photo Session.

Here are some FAQs for timing with pregnancy photos:

  • When should I find a photographer to do my maternity photo session?

I would recommend to reach out and find a photographer in your second trimester or pregnancy. That is because the photo session will take place at the beginning of your third trimester, and calendars can book up early in the busy months.

  • So when should I expect to have my photo session?

We want to make sure that baby bump is prominent, so usually we are aiming for around 30-34 weeks. It is a good time for you to be obviously pregnant, but hopefully not to the very uncomfortable last few weeks of pregnancy.

How soon should newborn photos be taken?

I hear people asking this question a lot when it comes to newborn photography. Do we need them right away? When do we book? Is two weeks too old? Is two months too old? What if we have to stay in the hospital longer than expected?

Here is the scoop and the typical timeline to plan your Newborn Photoshoot:

  • Book your photo session while you are still pregnant, in the second or third trimester.

This will allow me to make sure there is space on my calendar. It will also give you time to look over the information about what to expect and what to wear. I don’t know about you, but postpartum was not the best time for me to be taking in new information and planning things!

  • Your at home newborn photo session will be within two weeks after your baby is born.

You will notify once you have had your baby, and I will let you know my openings within the next two weeks. Of course we can have some wiggle room here and go up to three weeks if needed.

  • Why do you want to take the pictures when they are so young?

Babies sleep a lot during those first couple weeks, have less skin issues, aren’t having major growth spurts (read fussy!), and are also super new and tiny, which is adorable!! It is a good timeframe to get them before the start growing quickly!

  • What if we have medical complications or other reasons to delay the session past two weeks?

That is no problem. I have done newborn sessions up to several months after the baby is born. The priority is that you, your baby, and your family are safe and doing well. I am a mom as well and know the curveballs that life throws you sometimes, so I make sure that I stay flexible and understanding to not add on any more stress.

Welcome Home Beautiful Baby | At Home Newborn Photos with Monica Conlin Photography

This wonderful family blew me away during our photoshoot at their home. The raw emotions of love, excitement for their new baby, and the joy of being together created moments of true beauty that I felt lucky to be able to capture for them.

You know what makes a good photograph? Light, yes. Composition, yes. Focus and clarity, yes. But you know what makes it great? Emotion.

I want to help capture the emotion of your family during our photo session together.

There are a few things that are my job as the photographer to help facilitate this:

  • Talk with you beforehand and during the session about your family, what you enjoy, what you want from the photos, and what you are nervous about

  • Prepare you about what to expect so you can come in with the best mindset for the session

  • Create an environment that feels calm and comfortable for you to be able to relax

I will let you in on a secret…I don’t feel natural in front of a camera. And most people don’t. I find it takes a little time before anyone can truly relax with a camera in their face. So that is one of the things I emphasize during a newborn session, we have time. It is not rushed, it is supposed to be calm, low-key and go at the pace the baby sets.

Let me photograph your newest little family member and the joy of their arrival too!

Getting the Photos You Want from your Newborn Photo Session with Monica Conlin Photography

My job as your photographer is to find out & photograph what is important to you.

Yes, I have my overall images that I think about getting during my at home newborn photo sessions, but more importantly, I want to understand and take the photos that will be meaningful to you and your family.

Did you spend time and effort on the nursery decor and want to include the special details you poured hours into? Do you have a special outfit that you wore when you had your first child and want to capture yourself in that shirt with your second born? Do you have a meaningful tattoo, piece of artwork, specially knitted blanket, or other memento to document with your newborn baby? Or maybe you want to focus on the new sibling relationship.

These are the things and moments that should be included in your personalized photo gallery from our at home newborn photo session.

Before our newborn photo session in your home, I send you a brief questionnaire to hear more about what you are wanting for our time together. Feel free to be specific it there is something special that you want photographed.

I also will chat with you when I get to your home before we begin taking photos and hear more about the areas of your home that you do (and do not) want to get photos in as well. It is all about giving you the experience that fits your family’s needs and wants and making sure these photos are ones that you will treasure forever.
